Sleeping
Softly, silently the night
Envelopes my soul
Shadows dance across my sight
Remembering the light
The cushions grip my skin
While lead filled sheets pin
Each breath shallower than the last
Thanks to this enveloping cast
I try to fight the plot
All my efforts are for naught
Soon my mind slows it pace
Eyes return only empty space
Thoughts of events long gone
Fill my soul with feelings strong
The past rolls over my will
Pinned by the weight of the night
Struggling to regain control
The prize of the fight is my soul
My lungs for breath crave
To this night I am a slave
Eyes return nothing, the ears come alive
Every cricket sounding akin to a mob
I feel like drowning in tears
The weight of the sheets lifts
Skin falls numb
Thoughts parade through the streets of my mind
Watching with the wonderment of a child
Sometimes a participant
Mostly just watching
This is where I feel safe
Among the strangers of my soul
Knowing here pain is easily changed to joy
Joy is overcome by the light of reality
The pace quickens through my veins
I feel the light of the sun
The dreams turn more vivid, colorful
Enhanced by the light of day
Eyelids open, penetrate my dreams
The images linger in my mind
Here's the purgatory of my life
Am I waking up, or just falling asleep
With which dreamland do I live
